i think it is the custom for japan to bow when you greet each other. i am sure that the emperor of japan will extend his hand in order to shake our president"s when he visits here.

Those of you who cowardly refer to the proverbial "ugly Americans" ignorance of customs of other countries can kiss my American ass. I don"t recall General Douglas MacArthur bowing to the Japanese delegation on board the USS Missouri. My President bows to no one, Obama is nothing but a punkass. If any of you weaker persuasions want him, you can have him.

I think that the people who were criticising President Obama"s bowing to the Emperor of Japan are being plain stupid. What on earth can be wrong with respecting the customs of the country which you"re visiting? Some of the critics sound like truly UGLY AMERICANS, totally ignorant and disrespectful of other cultures.

Obama should do it again! Humility, not arrogance, hatches respect and maturity. Where is the freedom and respect of others America is claiming to champion if it doesn"t respect them as Obama has done? In Obama, lies the staff of U.S"s maturity. Bravo!!!

Obama maybe just bowing to Japan"s gilded monarch in other word a "puppet?"....all because Japan"s emperor is older than him! I always do that in my family..it is not because of being yourself holding so much power.. but just because that someone not just a relative but more older that I was...Considering of the fact that If Obama was that of my playmate; The Duke of Windsor used to call him Indonesia Jones. If in case he was not...that"s another story.

It was disgraceful! What planet do you people live on? Obama is the President, not a 21 year old college graduate. How would you feel if the leader of China bowed to another country"s leaders. Maybe next time Obama will bend down on one knee and kiss someone"s hand.

I missed this brouhaha when it came up several months ago, but I think Mr. Obama was just using a traditional form of respectful greeting. After all, when foreign peoples visit the United States, we expect them to know a little about our traditions and to respect and observe them.

Correct me if I am wrong. Isn"t it a Japanese custom to bow deeply to an elder or a prominent Japanese citizen? Isn"t it a common greeting or sign or respect? President Obama was meeting the Japanese emperor. Of course he was supposed to bow. It does not show him being weak. It shows that he has studied some of the common customs of the nation he was visiting and that he has respect for those customs and the citizens of that nation. These critics are ridiculous. President Bush ruined our... (More details.)

Having worked for Japanese companies for over 20 years I would say The BOW was as much for them as a handshake would be for an American. President Obama was only following the common greeting in Japan. All the rest is nonsense.
As another point, I have worked for the British,Japanese,French and Americans and the Japenese were a pleasure to work with in thier employment. |

It is sad that people in a so-called free, super power of a country can find fault in a greeting by its leader. One of the main problem that has never been fixed or addressed is why is racial prejudice still the root of all problems in America. America is not white or black, but a true rainbow. The true natives of this country were not imported over on a boat. The leaders of our country and all of its counter-parts (senate, media, religious leaders, so called citizens, etc...) are all travelers ... (More details.)
