This topic has sparked a discussion among my foreigner friends. To be specific, comments came from a crowd of Americans and an Australian. A few of my friends believe that "laowai" is generally a term that differentiates foreigners from native Chinese; however, context and tone are almost essential to judging whether being called "laowai" is endearing or a taunting statement.
